15th - 17th March and 19th - 20th March 2012 - Rainbow Beach

17th - 19th March 2012 - Fraser Island

Rainbow beach was a funny little place which had hardly anything there, which i found strange because they must have alot of tourists come through there to get to Frazer Island. This is literally a place you stay at before heading off to Fraser Island. We had 3 nights given to us for free because we had booked a combination tour to include the Whitsundays and Frazer Island, so we literally played pool and chatted to the other travelers the whole time we were there as there was nothing else to do.

The morning that we were supposed to head off to Fraser Island it took forever, our tour company did not seem very organised at all and we spent hours just sitting around waiting to get started. Finally our car was off, we had a really great group of people in our car, infact we had the most cooperative group altogether i think. In our car were Julia, Matt, Felix, Becky, Fran, Andy and myself .

Unfortunately we had the worst weather whilst we were on Fraser Island with exception of our first morning and the day we left. I also think our tour company was not very well organised and I'm not sure where our money went. The first night camping was horrible most peoples tents flooded so they ended up sleeping in the cars, i felt rough from a cold i managed to get a day before coming to Fraser Island and whilst cooking dinner a dingo ran off with half our food which we needed for the next few days. Luckily the dingo did not like potatoes and fruit so left it, so we got most of it back.

On the second day people who had the worst flooding in their tents were told to hang them out to dry under the main food canopy which seemed like a good idea. Our tent was actually not that bad so we left ours pitched and went off in the car for the days adventures. When we came back that night however one of the other guides (not ours) used the tents to give shelter from the wind whilst we were cooking which then meant several people no longer had tents to sleep in and when i questioned this (again not with our guide) he said people could sleep in the sand (under the food canopy) with poles in their hands to protect them from the dingos....was he having a laugh??? people got attached by dingos very recently and you would be sleeping in an area where food had been prepared so they were attracted to this part of the camp. Needless to say those people spent another night in the car.

Fraser Island itself was nice, unfortunately the weather meant we couldn't enjoy some of the sights but we got to see lake Mackenzie where the sand is so fine that you can actually brush your teeth with it, i tried, it tasted as nasty as you would expect, we also visited Eli creek and walked down it, normally you would float down the river but it was cold and raining so nobody did this, but we still enjoyed the place. Our next location saw Andy drop and break our small camera in the sand, but our lovely group of people in our car shared all of their photos with us...thanks guys!

Our last day at lake Wabby was by far the best, we had sunshine and we went swimming in the lake where if you stayed still long enough fish (the ones they use for pedicures) would nibble at your skin to eat away any dead skin, it was really weird and felt like the fish were head butting you. The lake was also full of catfish which would swim really close to you, it was so gorgeous.

When we took the car back we were then told we had to clean the tents, car, crockery etc etc...if i had hired a car myself and gone camping then i would have expected it, but we paid alot of money for this tour and where exactly did our money go...i recommend anyone who is looking at going to Fraser island, either go to Hervey bay and do it or hire out a 4wd yourself and go camping it will work out cheaper and there wont be alot of hanging around, but make sure you go because it is definitely a place worth seeing, i just think our experience was not as good as it could have been.
But our group definitely made this trip and we still made sure we had a good time.
