This morning we went to Schramsberg winery in Calistoga, on a tour of their champagne caves. They were the first to use the true champagne method and true root stock in the USA , so claim their wine to be a real equivalent to French champagne, even though it cannot be sold in Europe as such. The winery fell into disuse in the 1920's and was revised by Jamie Davies thirty years ago, which is why all the J.Davies pictures!

The tour was very interesting, the tastings most pleasant :-)

After that, we paid a quick visit to the Old Faithful (one of several in the US ) geyser, which spouted for us - a jet of blasting hot water and sulphur fumes. I have seen the 'original' (after which the word 'geyser' was coined) in Iceland, but this was a  different but still interesting experience - it spouted for much longer at a time.

The we drove back down the Napa valley to our hotel where we had an early night (time difference still playing havoc!)
