As the title suggests, I saw a bee fight a spider yesterday and it was magnificent.

I was just leaving the house to go back to work after lunch and I noticed a bee getting tangled up in a spider web at the base of one of the posts on our front porch. Now this web was surrounding the post all long the base and I didn't think the bee had a chance to get out of there. Also, the spider itself was underneath the porch, sticking it's legs up through the slats and smacking the bee as it struggled.

I sat entranced as this struggle unfolded. At first, I had thought that if the bee got caught I would free him because of my distaste for spiders, but then I thought, "I should just let nature take it's course. If the bee couldn't manage to free itself then who am I to take this spider's meal from him/her?" I was very zen at that moment. I think Australia's softened me on the whole spider thing.

Anyway, the bee did eventually manage to free itself. But instead of flying off in a mad frenzy, all freaked out because it was almost a spider's lunch (as I would've done), it just walked away. It just walked along the porch, not worried about anything. Like it was no big deal! That is one cool bee.

Maybe the spider (or the web) damaged the bee's wings?

I thought he was hurt at first too, but he did eventually fly away. I wouldn't rule PTSD out though. I wonder if he's having flashbacks.

Last year while engrossed in taking a close up pic of a bee moving into a bell shaped flower a spider lunged out from behind the flower and grabbed the bees behind. It was so shocking up close that I jumped about 3 feet. I soon found my composure and had a most interesting time trying to capture the struggle to the death with my camera - it was fascinating. The bee did manage to fly away but after a gigantic struggle. I think it was missing a bit of its behind. When I looked a my pics later I could see one leg of the spider just a bit.
