Where I stayed
We stayed at the Arcadia Beach Guest House and, like most hotels and motels on the island, they come and pick you up from the ferry
We hiked across from Arcadia Bay through the inland to Horseshoe Bay, which took just over an hour as there were some nice restaurants we had heard about from friends over there. We set out at just after 4, so the sun was still warm but it wasn't as hot as it was earlier in the day. It was quite a nice hike though, with plenty of new plants, flowers and skinks spotted along the way. When we arrived at Horseshoe Bay, we ate at the Marlin Bar where Kara had a prawn burger and I had the chicken Kiev. I know, I know, "Not very adventurous, Dave!" but it was just what I felt like, alright?! I was on vacation and I can order whatever I want! It was very good, thank you very much. And Kara really enjoyed her prawn burger too. We're going to try to mimic the recipe at home here this weekend (minus the beetroot...
We slept well in the safari tent that night, even though the birds were soooo loud! And Kara woke up to an awful smell at one point and reckoned that it was a koala fart. Apparently they are just rancid, but the owner told her the next day that it was probably an echidna (a spiny ant eater... look them up, they're weird!), which are also very very smelly. We went kayaking in the morning. The owner of the Guest House seemed reluctant to let us do because two girls took the kayak out the day before, left the bay and got trapped at another bay! They only returned as we arrived and checked in, having spent the night somewhere else with the kayak. We are expert kayakers though and would not let that happen, but of course he couldn't have known that. We look just like ordinary people, that's part of our disguise. After he begrudgingly allowed us to leave with the kayak we had a lovely time, rowing pretty far out and then letting the waves bring us right back into shore
One other thing we'd like to mention in this post is that we've discovered the perfect breakfast. You ready? Got a pen? Ok, it consists of scrambled eggs, a roasted tomato, garlic mushrooms, bacon, fresh bread (toasted, if you like), and a steaming cup of coffee. Now go and make this for yourself and tell us we're wrong. I don't care what time it is, go make it.
We ended our stay on Magnetic Island by hanging out at the marina, watching the boat come in and chatting with Trina and Ava on Kara's phone with Facetime. We positioned ourselves so that Ava could watch the ferry dock behind us. She wanted to come on the boat with us but we didn't let her, mainly because we're mean. It was good timing though as she seems to be going through a bit of a nautical phase herself. Her 3rd birthday party is fast approaching and it carries with it a Spongebob/Pirate theme. I may do the same for my 34th birthday party, which is also fast approaching.
