So we made a souffle today, and that, dear readers, is where our story begins.
I've never made a souffle before and neither had Kara, although she'd had one before when her Dad went through a French cooking phase. I'd never even had one so I didn't know what to expect, other than you can't make loud noises when they're in the oven or they will deflate. Or something to that effect. So, in my mind, they're apparently more like a sleeping baby than a food? Today is the Australian Labour Day so we both had the day off, and we thought, what better way to spend Labour Day than busting our humps in the kitchen?
It turned out to not be as tricky as we thought it might be, but with Julia Childs and the Art of French Cooking to guide us, we were practically assured success. So 5 eggs, lots of whipping and a very quiet half hour later, we were rewarded with our very first souffle. It was delicious and light and airy, and we also added in a bit of smoked paprika because Julia told us to use nutmeg but we didn't have any, so it had this lovely smoky flavour. We had it with a nice salad and some fish, and it turned out to be a very filling and satisfactory meal.
We also went to the beach today. Even though it was kind of cool, when the sun was out it was quite nice. Kara dared me to take off my shoes and socks and go in the water. The beach is still kind of gross, covered in seaweed and pretty smelly, but when all the seaweed gets cleared away and the summer waves keep the beach clean, it's apparently a really nice white, sandy beach. But I'm not one to back down from a dare, so off went my shoes and socks and into the water I galloped, with Kara right behind me. It was pretty cold in there, I gotta say, but it was definitely bearable. It was a nice sign of the times to come when we can head on down to the beach for the day once it warms up some more. Living a 5 minute drive or 10 minute bike ride from the beach is a definite bonus.
And that is what we did today. Went to the beach and made a souffle. How else you gonna' spend a Monday?
