Kara's sister Trina picked us up at the train station at 8 am Sunday morning when we arrived, with her two kids, Ava (2 and a half) and Drew (8 and half months) in tow, and she had bought us Tim Horton's for the ride. I sat between the kids on the ride home while Kara caught up with her sister in the front seat. Ava was pretty quiet, she had a smoothie, and Drew stared at me the whole ten minute ride home. When we got back to their place we played outside for a bit, until little Ava got stung on the lip by a wasp that had built a little hive underneath her slide
We went out for a walk later on which was nice. Ava had recovered, but her lip still looked like an elbow coming out of her face. She was walking around with carrot sticks stuck into her belt loops. Drew is a pretty quiet, observant fellow, with big eyes and a sweet laugh. He loves playing with his reflection in the mirror. Their dad, Adrian, was playing in a ball tournament that weekend so he returned Sunday evening.
The next few days were a blur of kids, messes and screeching that I guess parents know all about. It was the first time I had spent a considerable amount of time with two kids, although Kara was a pro. Makes me feel good about our future though, and I learned how to handle the little anklebiters. Tuesday was Adrian's 33rd birthday and this Thursday is my 33rd birthday so Great Auntie Jeanette came over for a special birthday supper that Trina put together for Adrian and I. Trina made spare ribs, an orzo salad and some delicious cupcakes and Kara made some spicy focaccia. It was a really nice treat and so nice to spend time with everyone
Some other highlights include a walk downtown and around the river valley, a stop-in at Kara's friends record store 'Listen' on 124th st (where we bought a new pressing of a Holwlin' Wolf album and Dave Brubek live in Mexico!), coffee with Kara's good friend Kristine Wichuk who is in the process of moving to Iceland shortly and is recently engaged, and walk to the Safeway where I got a sun burn on my neck.
Oh, and Kara and I also put the kids to bed one night so that Trina and Adrian could go out for dinner. Kara had Ava to deal with and I had the boy. It went alright, but my kid didn't stay down for too long. He was asleep for about 30 minutes and then was up and fussing. But I maintain that I did everything right. I put him in his pj's, fed him a bottle, rocked him in the chair and sang Roger Miller softly in his ear. What more could a kid ask for?
