I returned to the airfield yesterday to arrange a further couple of days in Columbus.
Almost by chance I visited a local Museum right on the road leading into the airfield. The Attebury-Bakalar Air  museum, dedicated to the base and it,s past inhabitants and there contribution to the service.
I watched a fascinating video of the experiences of a local gentleman called Gustav Potthoff. Who had the misfortune of being captured by the Japanese in WW2, and worked on the Thai-Burma "Death Railway".  The Museum has a section dedicated to his paintings and his life's work to remember his fellow POW's. The full story of this man's life cannot  be given justice by my few words here. I therefore would recommend you "Google", Gustav Potthoff, his story "Lest We forget!, and read it for yourself. This gentleman is now 90 years old and visits the museum almost daily. I had the good fortune to meet him on this day.
