A 500 mile leg of just over 3 hours at 10,500ft, and later at 12,500 almost direct track in near perfect weather to land on the flat plains of Columbus Indiana.
This airfield is a Municipal type, which generally handles light aircraft and offers amazing value to the hobby flyer. Within a couple of minutes the fuel truck arrives and offers Avgas at half the cost I pay at home, but mentions that there is a $5 (3) parking, tie down charge ! Within 10 minutes the assistant (Cody) , has supplied a rental car and organized a Hotel within a ten mile drive. However I missed the turning for the Hotel and went North on Route 65 for about 20 miles before I could turnaround.  It's much easier to navigate in the air!

He wasn't related to Buffalo Bill Cody by any chance was he Dave ?.

I suppose what you saved on the cost of the avgas you spent it on the longer than expected trip to the hotel, was there no chance of hopping the central reservation or do the indians complain?

davidbowie on

I did'nt ask his family tree, perhaps he was.
As far as jumping reservation etc, there was a warning on the Highway stating; speedsters could get a $2000 fine, and reckless drivers, 8 years in the State "Pen", ouch !

Living the dream Dave How's the plane running, everything running smooth I hope?

davidbowie on

Yes Dave, aircraft has been perfect (to date). There's no doubt that these long flights at altitude gets the best out of the machine. At 10 or 12,000ft it gives 167/170kts TAS on 12us/gls (48lts) an hour. Which is good for over 7 hours or 1200miles.
Total flying hours since departure has been 25. It's used less than two bottles of oil. I'm planning to change oil and filter when in california, which should take another 12/15 hrs.

Where do you plan on having long-range tanks installed?

Dave - I see you're making good use of Class D airports. For your next stop you might consider Quincy, IL (KUIN), a place I often stop on x-country flights. It's a short flight from Columbus. FBO is Great River Aviation. It's right on the Mississippi River in the American heartland. Hannibal, Missouri (boyhood home on Mark Twain) is 15 miles south, so some interesting things to see.

Dave your 45 mile away from the Brickyard home of the Indy 500, its well worth a trip to see the museum some fantastic cars and motorcycles I am sure you would love it.
You can even do a circuit of the 2.4 mile oval, but considerably slower than the speeds you are used to.
Cody will give you directions !!!! or has your rental car got GPS ???

Sam Jerrett on

We are honored to have you visit our state and city. Also have you visit our museum. You are very fortunate to have met Gus which can't be with us as much as he used to be. Have a great journey. Travel with God.
