Flag of Argentina  ,
Thursday, February 1, 2007

After being driven almost insane by the heat of Northern Argentina we threw ourselves onto our knees and kissed the ground at Ushuaia airport (and then very quickly replaced our shorts with all the warm clothes we owned). The temperature was a very British 9 degrees (although this is actually summer) and we instantly felt at home. We took great pleasure in being able to sleep in a bed with layers of blankets and duvets rather than fighting for who gets the fan on their side of the bed.

This picturesque town is located at the very tip of South America with the Beagle Channel to the South and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The port is the main staging point for cruise trips to the Antartic and so the town is flooded daily by wealthy, elderly tourists who believe that speaking loudly enough in English will make you understood and that all prices should be in US dollars. Needless to say, we had many entertaining people-watching experiences around town.

Glacier Martial - the trek up to the top of the Glacier Martial was a very steep but rewarding experience. The views both up to the glacier and down over the Beagle Channel are well worth the effort.

Beagle Channel - we took a catamaran ride along the Beagle Channel where we visited a sealion and penguin colony and were lucky enough to see an Emperor Penguin (which apparently aren't seen that often here) and a humpback whale on the journey.

Tierra del Fuego Parque Nacional - the trails around the National Park are set in picture postcard scenery with beautiful lakes, snow-capped mountains, beaver dams, and cute fluffy bunnies everywhere.
