The area around Bonito truly lives up to it's name. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and was like a little piece of (mosquito-free) heaven after the Pantanal.

We only planned to stay there for a day or two, but found that there were so many fantastic natural attractions to visit, that we ended up staying for five days to sample what it had to offer.

The great concentration of lime in the soil is responsible for the rivers being crystal clear, which makes swimming and snorkelling in the area a fantastic experience. There are also numerous caves and underground lagoons to explore and the town is seriously geared up for adventure activities.

The highlight of our stay in Bonito (and possibly even our whole trip so far) was snorkelling eyeball to eyeball with thousands of fish on the Rio do Prata. The photos and video we took simply do not do it any justice - it has to be seen to be believed.

David also visited the Anhumas Abyss, which is a lake located in a cave 72 metres below the surface of the ground. Unfortunately, the trip involved rapelling back up 72 metres which was not possible for me to do after my previous elbow injury.

We stayed in a top class HI hostel where we met some great people - including a lovely group of British nurses who had also just been been to the Pantanal and were thoroughly enjoying the relaxation of Bonito.
