After yet another sad farewell, this time to Wellington and the North Island as a whole(which we have considered to be a lovely home for the last 16 months!), we boarded the Blueridge ferry headed for the south island. Quite a parodox of feelings going at this point, huge excitement (reminiscent of a group of nursery children!) at the thought of being on a big boat(!) and wide eyed confusion stepping in from the baking sun to watch christmas movies on the tv deck!
We didn't stay inside the ship much, choosing to watch the incredible vista as we approached the south island only 3 hours and 20 mns later. The boys spotted three penguins (none of which I saw :-( but I was rewarded with lots of jelly fish (ya boo sucks!). The mountains and fijords of Marlborough sounds were breathtaking and truly spectacular as we sailed through them (not to sound like a travel guide!).
We arrived in Picton again in the blazing sun and as we headed on the 70km journey to Nelson, we all felt like we were driving through the south of France ar at least austria. There is a definate mediterranean/alpine feel here aided by the weather and the copious vineyards. Apparently nelson gets the most hours of sunshine in NZ so we reckon we have made a good choice - we will keep you posted about what we get up to whilst here.
Thanks to all of you who have replied, it's lovely to hear from you and so far only positive feedback about our site!
