We were terrified as we approached Mexico City, having read about three pages of warnings about the place in the Lonely Planet. Once again though Mexico proved to surpas expectations and we had a great few days here. Our arrival coincided with the start of the World Cup, so we spent a fair bit of time watcing football (I am a nice wife). Having watched the England v Paraguay game in our room we put on our newly bought Mexico tops (mine cost $3US) and headed to Zocalo (Mexico City's main square)for the Mexico v Iran game - the atmosphere was great although the picture on the big screen was terrible...and Mexico won! Viva Mexico!
Zocalo and its cathedral are build on top of the main temple of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. Part of the temple has been excavated and we visited the ruins. As my Year 3 class learnt about the Aztecs last year I was able to excite/bore David with lots of fascinating facts. We saw more evidence of the Aztecs on a visit to the chinampas (floating fields that were built on Lake Texoco). We took a boat trip along the waterways with Ros and Ron. We were expecting some kind of Mexican equivalent to punting...what we got were 100s of boats with families eating/singing/dancing on board whilst floating mariachi bands entertained them - very cool!
