The town of Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese explorer Manuel Lobo.  The town then changed hands 7 times over the next 98 years through war and diplomacy between the Portuguese and Spanish.

The town is located just an hour ferry ride out of Buenos Aires but feels like another world.  The streets are lined with cobblestone, the old town center is pedestrian only, and there is a tranquil feeling about the city.  From the lighthouse overlooking the city, it is a great view of the architecture and buildings that survive today.  There are some small museums but I only got to visit one as the rest closed at 4:30.

I only spent the afternoon but it was great to get away from the bustle of the big city.
