So today I am super excited to take my first solo train ride to Bologna. My friend Janet got a job up there and i promised I would come see her. Even though I only have one day off this week, I thought it would be worth it to go. My plan is to arrive by train, meet Janet at the central station and go from there...
Later that same day...
So, It was fantastic!!! I took the train up to Bologna with a nice window seat to view the Landscape. The train stopped in about 8 small towns on the way. Some of the scenery was very interesting. Off in the distance I could see hilltop villages and ancient walls. Then old villas and farms.
We finally reached the Bologna station and Janet was there with open arms. We took a bus to her (very nice) apartment and had a fresh lunch of pasta and salad.
Then we strolled over to the base of the longest portico in Italy. A portico means patio with columns and a cover. This goes all the way from the basilica on top of the hill, to the end of the main street below. That hill was a 1 hour climb and very steep but the view was well worth it. I could see the entire valley. Next we strolled to the main centre of the city and hung out window shopping and enjoying the fairy tale like atmosphere. The city is a unique blend of old and new, but, for lack of a better comparison, it seems like a movie set.
The buildings are midievil and renaissance, the streets are narrow and of course the Moon is big and low.
The timer went quickly and it was time to take the express train back to Rome. A very nice day!!!!!!
