India - Day 6 - Train to Jaisalmer
So on the one hand we were relieved when we arrived at the station to find at the very least, we had been assigned beds in the cattle class, we were unable to bribe or pay our way for a better ticket. The train was literally full.
As it arrived it, it was also quite clear that there seemed to be way more people on the train than beds. After squeezing ourselves and our baggage on board, we managed to find our beds about an hour in to the journey (actually, Paul went and found the conductor and got him to eject the people sleeping in our beds). After that, a little sleeping tablet later and sure we were nearly there! Not nearly has as difficult as we had feared, and now we're in the Thar desert on the border of Pakistan!!!
Our tuk-tuk from the station brought us by his hotel for a cup of chai and a hard sell for a desert safari. No such luck mate - but good chai. Finally got to the hotel literally in the middle of one of the turrets of the fort. It's amazing. Went for leisurely stroll through the fort in the scorching sun, then down to the lake to take a pedalo ride and view the stunning temples lining the lake with amazing views of the fort.
After an epic sunset from the rooftop of the hotel, we went off down through the town and to a beautiful rooftop restaurant overlooking an old haveli. Jaisalmer is full of beautiful old havelis - old houses magnificently adorned in marble carvings created by rich business men hundreds of years ago that made their money trading on the spice route to Pakistan.
Home early to our stunning hotel room.....
