Wow! What a thunderstorm. Last night we were hit by torrential rain and lots lightning. The rain on the caravan roof was so loud. It was the first rain we had experienced since Katherine.
We decided to leave Esperance a day earlier because of the weather and the late 1.00 pm checkout would allow us to enjoy a another "Espie" morning. I got up at 5.30am and went for a fish at the beach only catching a flathead and a very small salmon. During my time I had a persistent bird who continuously kept trying to steal my bait. He eventually succeeded flying off with the squid packet and all in his mouth.
We started the day by visiting Sammy the Seal again. Obviously Sammy doesn't start his tourist ambassador duties until 10 am because when we arrived at the jetty he was fast asleep on the shore. He was so relaxed that he actually looked like he was dead! With the smell of fish in the air he opened one eye and then the other and readied himself for action. Sammy enjoyed the fish heads and pilchards on offer and was happily playing in the shallows when we left.
We packed up the caravan which took a lot longer because everything was damp and headed off for the Fraser Ranges.
We stopped at Norseman and Emmy posed on the brass horse statue (we were told by a local that it was the thing to do) that the town was named after. She sat on top like a jockey almost getting blown off. Norseman was the horse who one day when he was tied up pawed at the ground and unearthed a gold nugget. This of course resulted in a gold rush and a town.
Eventually we made it to Fraser Range Sheep Station Caravan Park. Just off the Eyre Highway it was a pleasant spot for the night after travelling all day. The powered site was $30 and $1 per five minutes for showers. The facilities were excellent and it was a great place for a run. Despite promises of a camp fire it never eventuated so Emmy ate the marshmallows uncooked.
