The weather has become mild as we have moved East and sleeping at night is much easier. We slept in today until 6.00 am but the sun is still rising so early. After turning the TV serial around many different angles WIN (channel 9) came to life. Today the second cricket test from Adelaide started so I was keen to watch some one action. The aerial I bought has been a big disappointment buy a satellite dish instead.
We started the day by completing the Great Ocean Drive to take in more of Esperance's famous beaches. Our first stop along the road was a lookout that highlighted many of the beaches and islands populating the area. We stopped at many lovely beaches along the drive with the comment of "It would look more beautiful on a nice day with the sun out." Whilst we were driving along, Emmy spotted some fins dancing in the water. With excitement, I pulled the car into the lot (without moving it even once - I 'may have' moved Terry a few times during the trip while parking him!) We watched 20 dolphins chasing fish and playing in the waves. Very soon a large crowd had built up enjoying the acrobatic display. I snapped lots of pictures with varying degrees of success as the dolphins jumped out of the water and frolicked about. We visited Twilight Beach which was awarded 2006 Australian Beach of the year. It was a beautiful beach that on first appearances was very deserving of its title.
Next we headed to Cape Le Grand to explore the National Park and its surrounds. After paying the entrance fee of $11 we drove to Cape Le Grand beach. It was picture post card perfect with amazing white sand and turquoise water. There was a small camping ground with unpowered sites that was three quarters full. We had lunch and were almost carried away by the flies. In hindsight a fly net hat would been a good idea despite being a very average fashion statement. Our next destination was Lucky Bay voted the beach with the whitest sand in Australia. This beach is also famous for a picture being taken of a kangaroo lying down stretched out relaxing on the sand. The photo is on all the postcards! The sand is the whitest I have seen and very compact like cement. When you walk on it it feels like sandpaper scraping against your feet, a very strange sensation. A kangaroo wandered down (he didn't lie down though) so we took some shots of him feeding.
We drove back into town and Emmy, Chloe and I went fishing on Tanker Jetty a famous Esperance landmark. Despite the wind we had fun catching a wrasse and a squid (both released). The squid was amazing because six times he was on the squid jig and six times he let go as he was on the surface. The super squid deserved to swim away. Also on the jetty we came across Sammy the sea lion another famous Esperance local (he even has his own statue). The girls loved him and he loved his fish. At one stage he torpedoed through the water at Em who was screaming with excitement as she gave him a pilchard. They are such a beautiful animal and just like a big puppy dog.
