Managed to hire a motorbike for 6 for two days, so decided to go check some of the National Parks close to Chiang Mai.

Day 1 of the trip consisted of going to Doi Suthep National Park, a 1676m high peak home to one of Northern Thailand's most sacred temples.  The road on the northern side of the park is home to hundreds of tourist traps, from Monkey performances to ATV driving.  The majority of them look like pure shite, but I did stop at one of them that sounded pretty good.  Maesa Elephant Camp is one of the areas more famous and popular attractions, where they have taken retired working Elephants and put them to a more fun life.  Though to pay for their upkeep, they need to get the tourists in, which means putting on a show.  Now, I'm still (months later) in two minds to this show.  My first thought is that they shouldn't have to perform tricks for people.  It's weird.  My second thought though is that it does pay for their upkeep, without which I'd imagine these Elephants would still be pulling logs around somewhere.  My third thought was that the show was ace.

I won't discuss it all, as you should get off your arse and go yourself (stop being too scared to travel), but it involved Elephant football, Elephant Art, Elephants playing musical instruments and a lot more.

After this I traveled west towards the small town of Samoeng, deep in a valley between huge green peaks.  A small market there sold some yummy sausage made of rice as well as the best bread I've ever had.  From there it was south to Hang Dong, where I caught the main road going back to Chiang Mai.
