"Oh, we aren't going to be getting married in Mauritius anymore.  It's too far for everyone to get to...and it wouldn't be a valid wedding.  So we are going to Bali...that's closer.  Sort of".
-My sister, November 2008.

When she uttered these words I didn't think much about it.  I was laying in the sun at her home in Melbourne, contemplating my trip back to the UK after half a year having a ball of a time in Australia.  I sort of forgot all about it for another six months, when I found myself south bound to Singapore, on the same Singapore Airlines Airbus A-380 that took me to Australia almost a year (to the day) before.

Things were different this time though.  For one, it would be a very brief trip.  Since arriving back in the UK, I had struggled to get back into the lucrative world of the City of London, since the economy collapsed whilst I was on a beach in North Queensland.  This meant my original plan - Thailand, Laos and then to Bali - wasn't happening at all.  It also meant I had to choose the cheapest dates to fly on, meaning it gave me no more than 8 days stay in Indonesia.  I also had to be back in UK for a wedding two days after my Sisters, and as it was some close friends I couldn't miss it.

The other difference was that my long time traveling partner, and on/off/on/off romantic partner, Helen, wouldn't be accompanying me.  She too had struggled with work, but the main difference was that an once in a lifetime opportunity had popped up for her - she would be among a certain few allowed to do archeology in various parts of Pompeii, in southern Italy.  Money meant she was restricted to one trip, and so we all told her to go to Italy.  Which she is doing as I type this.

So yeah that's the background to the trip.  It would be a whirlwind trip to Singapore and Indonesia, alone for a few days before meeting the rest of the wedding party when they flew in.  It had been a long time - 6 years - since I last flew alone (when studying in the states) so I was looking forward to it.
