Flag of Ireland  ,
Monday, November 1, 2004

After a hectic run up to the summer holidays I jumped on a plane to Ireland... with Kurt and the bikes.

From Dublin it was a two week 950km loop through Kilkenny, Tipperary, West Cork, Kerry and Clare ending up in Longford with the folks for the last week. The weather was pleasant enough (well, by Irish standards!), but the head wind did start to become personal, taking a dive north as soon as we turned our backs on the prevailing SW wind.

Biking is certainly a wonderful way to see the country, and by all accounts the Irish drivers were second to none by courtesy standards. Cyclists are still a bit of a novelty outside the main tourist routes and our little orange flags got a lot of attention. Designed for that very purpose with all those stone walls in mind, the flags caused great consternation during the peak hurling season as to what county we supported!

B & Bs are still hard to beat and this new smoking ban in pubs is the best thing since sliced bread. One of the highlights was the Willy Clancy set dancing and traditional music festival in Miltown Malbay, West Clare. For a week each year this village is overtaken with dancers and musicians from all corners of the world, tapping and fiddling into the early hours. Japanese, Germans, Americans and British all rubbing shoulders with polkas and jigs... some even capable of conversing in Gaelic. I've put together a slideshow of our trip.
