South Edisto River to Beaufort

An uneventful night at anchor on the South Edisto. We worked out we could esily make Beaufort (Bew-furt) by 1500 if we started out at 0930. With this schedule we would not be passing through the Fenwick cut at the portion of tide above MHWS as Army Corp of Engineers reported shoaling both sides of the channel earlier this year. Passed through without any problem but by missing the exceptionally high part of the spring tide if we were to make a mistake and go aground we would not be neaped. Made through the Ashepoo Coosaw cutoff which had a dredge working on the Coosaw River end. It was quite obvious what the drill was but there was all sorts of VHF jibber jabber from the boats behind asking the operator how to pass his yellow buoy. We passed without incident and then put the headsail up, shut down Doris (our Yanmar diesel engine) and sailed almost close hauled in 20 knots on the wide open part of the Coosaw as fast as the two boats behind us could motor. When the wind veered and we resumed motoring one of these characters called us up and said we needed to watch where we were going because the water was shoal (and talking to another boat "we were going to get a rude awakening") - it was a simple part of the passage but naturally this causes one to check charts etc etc.

Current turned in the Coosaw River and we had to slow down to avoid arriving at the Ladies Island bridge too early. Passed through bridge at 1430 and saw some boats at the anchorage that we knew or have seen before including the Beneteau 423 we had seen hard aground the day before at the Dawho River entrance. Captain Bobs updates, the Dozier and to some degree the Coastal Pilot all warn of problems at the Dawho so will pay even more attention to passage planning and this probably a good thing for Georgia. There are a lot of places where the project depth of 12 feet is a pipe dream but this generally only becomes a problem for us when close to low water as we were yesterday.

We docked at Port Royal Landing Marina at 1600 and took some fuel. We have used only 9 1/2 gallons since Georgetown - all motoring except for the short sail on the Coosaw. The Marina seems to be very pleasant and friendly and Larry, the main man, says he does remember Simon and Hilda on Calisto and we pass on his regards.
Dave has decided to accept an assignment from a client to survey a ship in Savannah on the 18th or 19th. This will substantially extend the cruising budget. It seems fairly certain but we will not know for sure until Monday. We feel we need a two day break which will cover the weekend and as Dave will need a car to go to Savannah we will hire a car and do some exploring of the surrounding area on Monday and Tuesday.

What we thought was the current running past the boat last night is probably the snapping shrimp and we can hear it again tonight. It sounds a bit like rice crispies or someone slowly filling a bath tub. Apparently the shrimp are about one inch long and make the noise by snapping their claws and causing tiny water cavitation bubbles which when they fill make a cracking sound. We thought the snapping shrimp did not start until Florida!

In conversation with the skipper on the boat that docked before us learned that he was broadcaster of the "rude awakening message". Said he does not like sticking to the magenta line and usually goes offshore. Did not quite get to the reason for the message but perhaps it was something to do with sailing faster than they were motoring and staying on the magenta line too.....

We seem to be younger than most doing this and as Dave has recently turned 60 we admire the stamina of some of the older people who are doing this.

We have been having trouble uploading pictures but found we can do it with a fast WiFi connection so hope to add more pictures during our layover.
