A long day.  We motored down a short portion of Waccamaw River and turned into the the ICW Pleasant fine day.  This stretch of the ICW winds through the marshes and is a long way from anywhere.  One small town, McClellanville up a creek, appeared to be worth a visit but we having lost almost a week to weather we wanted to make some distance and kept going.  In one location at G 89 shortly before we were thinking about finding somewhere to anchor the water got very thin.  The chart plotter which has supposedly new Navionics charts indicated shoals to port and in avoiding these we were showing less than 6 feet.  The scaredy old skipper here has an offset on the depth sounder so it was actually showing four feet.  The depth alarm can be set to help provide a warning but shoals of fish etc cause so too many missed heart beats so we have not used it for a long time.

We picked an anchorage at Whiteside creek and anchored with a Canadian boat that had been up at the oxbow just above Bucksport.  Shortly after a singlehander turned up in small Pacific Seacraft and threw out his CQR near us and disappeared down below.  We anchored near another small side creek and together with a trawler that came in just as the sun set all boats were lying in differnet directions.  There were some tidal eddies and then the wind piped up to more than 20 knots.  A very open exposed anchorage but we had no  problems and the next morning Garmin anchor monitor actaully showed we had lain to the anchor quite quietly without too much walking round the anchor.
