Just arrived in Kiev this morning. My hostel is a nice, though it also doesn't have any hot water thanks to the old Soviet system (please see attached photo). I spent most of the day walking around town. Kiev is a really pretty city. It has a much more European feel than Moscow, having many small tree lined streets and old buildings. The city is fairly hilly and lies mostly on a hill above the river. I checked out the Maiden Nelazehnosi, which is the scene of the infamous Orange Revolution. Well it is still "infamous" for hundreds of supporters of Yulia Timoschenko are camped out demanding a coalition be formed, since the parliament has not functioned since April when the coalition broke up (so much for a functioning democracy eh?). Outside of that I saw numerous churches and indulged myself in Ukrainian fast-food (i.e. cherry-filled pierogies and borsch mmm!)

Hey from Saul and Marianne!
Thanks for the email. Nice to hear from you. Looks like a great trip. Aren't you glad you were in Lebanon last year? Stay safe.
