Day Trip
Entry 38 of 39 | show all | print this entry |
I didn't make it out today. I was close though, so hopefully tomorrow. I took a short train ride to Heidelburg instead. There is a nice castle there. I liked it because it was half functional and half decorative, unlike Luwdwig's castle in Bavaria which was only meant to be pretty. It also happened to be a beautiful day outside and everyone was out playing soccer or sunning themselves.
I think I am beginning to look German. I had four people today think I was German. Three of them tried to talk to me in German and were disappointed when I said "sprechen zie englisch?" A group of three English speakers thought I was German. When they asked for help they spoke to me like I was a three year old with down syndrome. All three were stewardesses on a flight that came into Ramstein. The guys were flaming queers, so I thought they would be more culturally sensitive or something, not talk down to me. When they found out I spoke English, they said to each other "oh he speaks English" like I still couldn't understand them or like I wasn't there. I think its a good lesson for when I have to speak to someone through a translator. Speak to the person even if they cannot understand you. Don't talk to the translator like they aren't there. Its demeaning. A trip for travellers: No one checks tickets on local German trains, just the express trains. So you don't have to buy ... er, I mean keep your ticket out.

Flaming Queers? (reply) Jul 15, 2006 22:43 EST by tireiron
My, my, you obviously didn't pay attention to those diversity classes I am sure they had at the academy! Flaming queers indeed! Next thing you are going to imply is that all male flight attendants are homosexuals! You know, perpetuating stereotypes and all that.
