Back on the mainland now and further south to what, according to the book, is one of the outstanding places to visit in Malaysia. It mentions Cherating on the back cover as well as in the top destinations...but when we got there we were a bit confused. The place seemed dead. Sure, there was a nice enough beach, but there were just groups of empty chalets everywhere and all but a couple of the restaurants and bars were closed and there wasn't even anyone in the ones that were open! It seemed to be a town that was built entirely for tourists to stay, without any permanent residents or sense of community. And now (for whatever reason) there weren't any tourists, there was nothing else there. We were going to stay here longer, but decided to just stay the one night in the end. Not a place we'd recommend, really. Don't always trust the guidebook!
