Leaving Moldova was surprisingly difficult, both emotionally and physically. After spending almost a week with Dave and Tatiania, they became an emotional outlet, something we haven't had on our trip. So waving goodbye at the bus station was more sorrowful than I expected. Unfortunately, our struggles didn't end there. We were able to get into Chisinau and to the bus station with almost no troubles. Our over night bus, direct to Brasov, Romania was set to leave at 7pm. At 6:30, no bus, 6:40...6:50...6:55, the bastards cancelled our bus! So there we are, it's 7:00 pm and we don't have a way to get to where we need to be. We went into the bus station and of course the ticket lady only spoke Romanian. Fortunately, there was a man who spoke some English and translated to the ticket lady our situation. The resolution...an overnight bus that went to Bucharest. Bucharest! If you read our Bucharest entry, you understand why this was frustrating. So we left Chisinau at 7:30pm and arrived in Bucharest about 6:30 am. It would have been much sooner if we didn't have three hours at the border dealing with passport control.
So, it's 6:30 and we figure the bus will drop us off at the bus station right next to the train station. We will grab one of the hourly trains to Brasov (about a 2 hr ride) and be good to go. No. The bus dropped us off outside of the city and about 2 hours later, we finally found the train station. Oh, Kim got no sleep on the bus and I got about an hour. It was tense.
Finally, Brasov. Brasov is a lovely town, about 200,000 people, in the center of Transylvania. Our hostel was just blah and our second night we shared a room with two deaf women who were very loud! There is a great mountain to hike in Brasov and on our way up we met an American we chatted with and enjoyed a drink with following.
We took a couple day trips, one to Zarnesti, to a Romanian national park. We did a bit of hiking, but it was generally a bust. The next day we went to Sigisoara, saw a cool church, clock tower, and where Dracula (Vlad) was born.
After three nights in Brasov, we were off to Sibiu.
