The train to Budapest from Krakow was pretty nice. Kim and I had our own compartment with two bench seats and I slept probably 5 hours during the 9 hour journey. Unfortunately we crossed two borders and it seemed like every hour someone was checking our ticket or passport. When we crossed into Slovakia, a cop with a drug sniffing cocker spaniel came into our compartment. Very cute! It was a lovely ride.
We met some Americans who were staying at the same hostel and we caught a bus with them to our hostel. It's a lovely hostel. Back Packer's Guest House is easily the best hostel we've stayed in on our trip. Our fellow travelers are great, very friendly and interesting. It's quite a busy, social hostel, but the rooms are quiet and we were able to sleep well. They also sell cold beer for about $1.
The city of Budapest is wonderful as well. We found ourselves leaving the hostel in the morning and not coming back until late in the evening. There is a great city park with thermal baths (we skipped those) a circus and a zoo. There are beutiful monuments and statues all over the city along with great food. We happened to walk into the opera house one afternoon to see what was playing and we got tickets to Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet for less than 4 U.S.D! The performance was fantastic.
On the last day we were their, we went on a seven hour walking tour. We walked to the top of the Citadel, the highest point on the Buda side of Budapest. In the hill that makes up the Citadel, there is a cave in which hermits, from all around Europe, congregated to establish a church. We were able to walk into the cave and watch these hermits pray. Very cool.
From Budapest we took the night train to Bucharest, Romania.
