Finally arrived in Krakow after a day of traveling on trains. Krakow has always been a destination of choice for me since my grandmother's (on my Mom's side) parents are from there. Unfortunately the first two hostels we went to were booked, but we were lucky at the third. It has a small city feel although it boasts over 700 thousand residents.
We've eaten some authentic Polish food. The Pierogies were great! We've walked around the castle and got stuck in the rain (it's always raining).  We are also lucky enough to have arrived during the Krakow Festival. Last night we got to enjoy a free concert in the main square.  The stage was amazing we could even here the music continuing when we returned to our hostel.
Much of the story of Krakow has been dictated by WWII. We walked around the old Jewish quarter that used to house tens of thousands of Jews, but now only about 100. We took a day trip to Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp, and besides the bad tour guide, it was pretty amazing. Hundreds of thousands of Jews, Romani (Gypsies), Polish political leaders, etc. were killed in the camp before it was liberated by the Russians. To see some of their dwellings, walk where they worked, stand under gallows, and meandor through the creamatoria was heart stopping.
After the day at Auschwitz, three days in Krakow all together, we boarded our night train to Budapest.
Forgot to add that in Amsterdam a pigeon flew into my face. Maybe the bird was high.
