Where I stayed
We have had some highlights over the last few days though.
We caught up with Anne and Bill, the family we stayed with last time we were in London. They took us out to lunch in Covent Garden to a Belgium place. Beer, muscles and frites = great choice! It was great to catch up with them both again and we were lucky they could see us at the last minute with their extremely busy social calendar. Hopefully we will see them again before too long.
Another highlight was a trip to the theatre to see Les Miserables which has been playing in London for over 25 years. Tim and Sam gave us the tickets as a wedding gift and I have always wanted to see it. Tim, Henry and I performed in Les Mis when we were in high school together so it brought back a lot of memories. It was great to see a show where I knew every song and Ly recognised a few as well. The actors playing Jean Valjean and Javert were very good and had amazing voices. Thanks Tim and Sam for an amazing night!
I am always surprised by London’s cultural diversity and I always try and make the most of it when eating out here. Over the last few days we have had English, Belgium, Thai, French, Mexican, Turkish, Indian, Pakistani and tonight probably Greek. All the food has been good and quite authentic given how far away some of those countries are.
Yesterday we were meant to fly to Dubrovnik in Croatia. We travelled out to Gatwick airport where we were told that our flight had been cancelled due to volcanic ash. Luckily we will get a refund on our flights and accommodation but will miss out on going at all. Queuing for nearly two hours to be told that they couldn’t get us there was the worst part. This is the second time Ly has tried to go to Dubrovnik and the second time she has had her flight cancelled. Anyway our original hotel here in London was booked out so we have moved to a hotel in Earls Court which is a bit further but seems like a nice and quiet area. We will probably check out a museum or gallery tomorrow and try and make the most of these unplanned days in London. Volcanic ash only seems to be affecting Spain and Portugal today so our flight to Russia in a few days should be fine. Wish us luck!
