Hi everyone!

Ly here, well we had a fun filled day with my aunty and two cousins Wendy and Linda. We caught the train to Amsterdam today which was a quick 30 mins. We found Amsterdam to be a very multicultural place with plenty of different races here and it was hard to figure out who was actually dutch. There are certainly plenty of English guys here -  no doubt for the legal marijuana. You can certainly smell pot everywhere coming from the "coffee shops". There seems to be quite a large indonesian and chinese population here and my aunty kindly took us to have yum cha which was just what I needed after having had so much european food!
Daniel and I were keen to go see the Anne Frank House and so my cousin Linda was able to lead the way for us. The Anne Frank House was really fascinating to see although the house has been turned into a museum and a very modern one at that! The annex that they hid in from the Nazis was behind a bookshelf which led into a secret passage way. The rooms werent as small as I expected it to be but they were certainly very oppressive. Reading parts of her diary was very depressing and I cant imagine what it would have been like to be in hiding for over two years and to have to always stay quiet in fear of your life. We both wish that we had read her diary before coming to see the house.

After the Anne Frank House we wandered around the canals. It was quite cold today when the wind picked up but there was no snow here. I find it amazing the number of people who still cycle in the cold here. There are very good designated bike paths and its amazing when you come out of the train station there just seems to be thousands of bikes all lined up. Goodness knows how people to find and recognise their own bikes.

We caught the train back and we all went out to dinner including my cousins boyfriends and we went to a chinese restaurant which had an excellent buffet. There was nice cuts of steak and fish you could choose the chefs to grill for you. There was also a station where you could pick out your vegies, meat or seafood and noodles and the chefs would cook it in a wok for you with your choice of sauce. There was a lot of choice and we enjoyed the steam dim sum, duck pancakes and steaks. I also had some really nice asian desserts which werent really to Daniel's liking.

My relatives here all speak really good english which has been great for us to learn more about dutch people. It's strange to see them speak dutch, vietnamese and english! Tonight we learnt that the dutch and the germans have a rilvalry and that the dutch would find it offensive for us to mistake them for being german or for speaking like germans. Owning a car here and learning how to drive is very expensive because young people are not allowed to be taught by their own parents in learning how to drive. The winters are long and they dont seem to get much sunlight here.

Seems there aren't very many dutch dishes with so many cultures here now. We haven't seen any places that sell dutch pofferties here. Seems many young people here just go crazy for McDonalds and KFC.

My aunty is taking Daniel and I to Rotterdam tomorrow for some more sightseeing. I've had a wonderful time catching up with my female cousins and aunty today (my uncle had to work) Their english has improved a lot and I think because this is now the second time I have met them they are much more comfortable and chatty with me. I do hope they come to Australia to visit us but it seems they believe Australia to be a place filled with killer spiders and being typical girls that freaks them out.

Hope everyone is going well. Lots of love

Ly and Daniel

They must be surprised to meet Daniel. I had to read a fair bit of your travel stories as I was too far behind. Ivy was back in Sydney last week. It is 40 degree in Sydney today.
Have a couple of Heineken for me while you are there Daniel. :)
Have a good time with your relatives in Holland.
