Well no animals gnawed on our faces during the night so we decided to stay another night in this hotel.
We went out to explore Vienna today and took the underground to the Schonbrunn Palace. This palace was the summer residence of the Austrian royal family and housed some very famous European royals such as Marie Antoinette, Maria Theresa and Sisi (Elisabeth of Bavaria). Sisi is a bit of a cultural icon here and helped to unite Austria and Hungary back in the day. Maria Theresa was the Austrian ruler for many years and ruled over Hungary, Croatia, what is now the Czech Reuplic, Milan, parts of the Netherlands and other parts of Europe all while having 17 children! The palace is actually quite modern compared to many we had seen and is not particularly ornate. There were some amazing heaters that were fired by wood from behind the walls so the family were not disturbed
We then ventured into the old town of Vienna starting at St Stephen's Cathedral which is a large gothic building. Unfortunately much of it is covered in scaffolding at the moment but it still looked quite imposing in the way that gothic buildings do.
We found Vienna to be a really nice European city especially for walking. The streets are wide and pedestrian friendly and everýthing is very well maintained and clean. There are lots of shops especially cake and chocolate shops. Cake and bakery goods are very popular here especially apple strudel.
For dinner we had to head out into the cold again and the snow was really coming down! We had more Austria food which meant more dumplings. Ly had Goulash with dumplings and I had cheese filled sausages wrapped in bacon which was as good as it sounds. They absolutely pack the plates with food at this place and yet we still made the mistake of ordering desert. I had dumplings stuffed with chocolate nougat and Ly went for the crepes. Again too much food to finish but kept us warm on the walk home through the snow.
Anyway I feel like I'm dumpling at the moment and with no more skiing to burn it off I think I will have to ease off on the food or I will need to book an extra seat for the flight home and ask for one of those humiliating seat belt extender things.
You better be making the most of the warm weather for us because we miss it!
