We arrived in Singapore in the evening. We got a taxi to our B&B at 'Sleepy Sams', which is in the Arab Quarter of the City. Sleepy sams was actually really nice & excellent location as it wasn't far to the MRT (metro) & set on a quiet pedestrianized street with a few restaurants & shops. It was also a stones throw from the Sultan Mosque, a beautiful building & the praying didn't really bother us because we were so tired when we got to bed. On our first evening we went to a local Egyptian restaurant where I had some of the tastiest hummus ever. Next day we started at Orchard Road, a road full of the pricier shops of Singapore & a few smaller shops. Next we headed to Chinatown where we visited some of the temples such as; Sri Mariamman (Hindu temple) & Thian Hock Keng temple. Here we also wandered round the shops & had some lunch. Also got drenched by a thunderstorm! We then headed to Little India, where we visited the 'Tekka Market', full of beautiful sari stalls & clothes upstairs, downstairs is the 'wet market' where butchers go to work in full view of the customers, not so nice
Balloon Ride
. In Little India we also visited the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Little India had lots of street stalls with flowers brought as offerings at the temple. We then went to Sim Lim Square, the place to buy electronics. We had a good look but after checking prices at home on the web it wasn't that much cheaper. On this evening we went back to Chinatown to the Lau Pa Sat Festival Market where we got a meal & beer for about $15 (5 pound for us both). Here we also watched the satay men go to work. Next day was mostly spent going back to our favorite places from the day before & we had lunch at another hawker stall in Chinatown called the Maxwell centre. In the evening we had a very different night from the one before. First we went on a tethered helium balloon, which took us 150m up, where we had fantastic views of the city at night. After this we went to the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel. Here we had Singapore Slings. Also every table there are piles of monkey nuts, the floor was very crunchy to walk on as you throw the shells on the floor. The drinks actually weren't that expensive, we paid $20 for a cocktail which is about 6-7 pounds. After this we went to the Quay for a meal at a restaurant riverside. On our last day we took the monorail to Sentosa, an island south of Singapore. It is very different here, very resort like but a nice escape from the city.
