We arrived in Franz Josef on the 25th, staying at Chateau Franz. Cool hostel with great views of the mountains & glacier. The main reason we have come here is to visit the glacier. Originally  we had booked onto a half day trek up the glacier, which was about 4.5 hours long with around 1.5 hours on the ice. However after arrival & talking to several people we changed to a full day trek. We were advised that on the half day you spend most of the time walking to the glacier & you don't get to see many ice features. The full day was 8 hours long with around 6 hours on the ice. We started at 08.15am with a 2.5km walk to the glacier. When we got to the glacier we saw a ice cave collaspe into the river, which was pretty cool. Armed with our ice talonz attached to our boots we set off up the glacier. There was 8 people in our group & a leader (from Morcombe Bay!) who used an ice pick to cut steps into the ice for us. We saw amazing ice features & blue ice (which is basically really condensed ice, found further into the glacier). The glacier was massive & looked a lot closer then it was. We are really glad we did a full day trek, feel like we really achieved something, but our legs really ache today! Got some great pics!
