Where I stayed
Holiday Inn express Wabash Avenue
The first visit was to MilleniumPark,an amazing oasis in the big city: large outdoor performance areas,a massive garden plot(Lurie gardens....a combination of plant areas, artistic water features, bridges(including one by Gehry),many seating spots and large hedges enclosing it all.Wrigley Square has a structure of Greek-looking columns in a semi-circle.Further on,there is a gigantic stainless steel sculpture that reflects the surrounding buildings and the people around it.Everyone is trying to photograph themselves reflected in the sculpture including yours truly. It's an Anish Kapoor creation.
I then took a timeout to listen to a Celtic concert with Jerry Douglas And Aly Bain,a truly ethereal sound fronted by an angelic but powerful female voice! a free outdoor performance.
Then off to the Art Institude. It has a remarkable collection of French impressionists including Seurat's masterpiece, excellent Van Goghs and other classics. Also a photographic exhibition by New York artists in the 30's and 40's like Weegee et al.,black and white images of a very blue collar city.
Chicago does show how a city can build interesting and aesthetic skyscrapers. The area arou nd the river has buildings with great lines.Very different shapes at the top.
Was going to see the Sox play but itwasagainst the loser Indians. Tomorrow a riverboat architecture tour. Toodeloo!
