Luckily I have still been able to ride my bike this week, although I got rained on a few times. The weather still isn't cold enough to snow and I wonder if we will get any snow at all this year. On Friday I had a job interview at a hotel in Heidelberg and the time is really ticking for me to find a study placement. As with everything I seem to leave it to the last minute. We had beautiful blue skies so we decided to drive up to the Königstuhl and take some photos of the sunset.
It doesn't matter what camera you have, if you don't have the right lighting conditions what you see with your eyes won't match what you take with your camera. I read that the first and last few hours of sunlight are called the magic hours because the light is nice and soft as it comes through the atmosphere
The problem is getting the right exposure. Too dark and you lose the details, too bright and it is over exposed. If we had some more time I would like to have stayed up there and get some photos when it was completely dark, but I didn't have gloves and it was 2 degrees!
I got a new lens this week: Canon 40mm f2.8 STM. It is called a pancake lens because it is so thin. The 40mm means a fixed focal length (no zoom) and the widest aperture is f2.8 which is great for macro and night photography. I decided to buy this lens over the Canon 50mm f1.8, which has a wider aperture and is half the price, because of the size, build quality and optics. I also now have a polarising filter to cut out glare on sunny days and a lens hood for protection.
It was another hard week at the German school. We are definitely reaching a level now, where you can't rely on what you have already learnt because we have learnt most of the grammar. The lessons consist mostly of reading a text, learning the new words and verbs and answering questions or exercises based on the text
One of the texts was based on an English study which set about to find the world's funniest joke and had 30,000 contributions from 2 million people. People had to submit and rate their top 5 jokes and the study came out with some interesting results. Apparently the Germans laugh the most at jokes and Canadians the least (and only about Americans). After all the dirty jokes were sorted out, a joke from an English Psychiatrist came out as the winner:
World's Funniest Joke
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't
seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy takes out
his phone and calls the emergency services.
He gasps: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says: "Calm
down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence,
then a gunshot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says: "OK, now
