Howdy folks,

Working shifts is a bit like sleep walking, you get things done without much thought. That is especially true when I get up at 4:30am and ride to work to start at 6am. Although the sun is starting to come up, I don't really feel awake until 8am! It is kind of like being on autopilot. On Thursday, we had the grand opening of the Decathlon warehouse although its been functional for the last 4 months or more.

There were around 200 people there with beer and alcohol and canapes (finger food) plus a few of the products laid out for people to look out. It was a well run corporate publicity event which highlighted the jobs constructed in the community and failed to mention that they are all miminum wage. That means that we can't even afford the products we pack! As a worker from a working agency, I get paid less for doing the same job plus I don't get the corporate discount on the product line. Working overseas sucks!

On a good note, the employees got invited out to a local restaurant in Schwetzingen called Blaues Loch (Blue Hole) and had a buffet with free beer. It was good to get out and socialise and on the the company's tab. The bad thing was I had to work the next morning at 8am!

On Saturday after work, Steffie, Christian, Tanja and I took the Straßenbahn into Mannheim to take a look at the Stadtfest (city festival) organised by the local Eichbaum Brauerei and spanning the shopping district from the Wasserturm to the Paradeplatz. There were about 5 stages with different music and food and drink stalls lining the sides. Popular items included cocktail bowls with fruit pieces, Hugos and Ernas (two champagne based mixes) and half metre long bratwursts.

The bands weren't great, but it was free so you couldn't complain and there were plenty of people in the streets enjoying the atmosphere. Later we went and sat down at Cafe Eis Fontanella and Christian ordered me a Spaghetti eis which is icecream made to look like spaghetti. They press the icecream through a spätzle press and add strawberry sauce (pasta sauce) and white chocolate pieces (parmesan) for the toppings. It looked kind of strange, but it tasted good!
