I wasn't keen to head back into Heidelberg alone on Friday night for the Sprach Cafe as Steffie was watching the new Twilight Movie. So we went on Saturday instead after we helped her brother Oliver out by picking up his new kitchen furniture. We took the 3:30pm tram into Heidelberg and got out at Bismarckplatz where there was some sort of marching band going down the Plöck and Fire Engines everywhere making noise. We escaped the crowds by crossing over the Neckar River and up to the Philosopher's Way which is a famous walking route in Heidelberg.
The road climbs steeply up from the street and it is a wonder how the cars manage to stay put! After a 10 minute climb, we came out at the garden which gives a lovely view of Heidelberg
There were many more stalls than I had envisioned and in the middle was a carousel. We stopped to drink a glühwein which is a warm spiced red wine and tastes great on a cold day. The night was around 8 degrees so was pretty warm for this time of year. I was hungy so we stopped to eat a 0.5m long bratwurst which for 5 Euros wasn't so bad. Christian was feeling hungry and ate 3 times as much as everyone else. Hot chestnuts are also popular at this time of year, but can be expensive. Tania ate a Germknödel which is a sweet yeast dumpling filled with sugary goodness. After taking a look at everything, we headed away to find a pub!
We stopped at the Eckstein (Cornerstone) Kneipe which was a loud music bar and sat down for beer and cocktails. We were lucky to get an early table because the bar filled up pretty quickly. The music was good and everyone had a good time, although Tania seemed to be a little more drunk so we caught a taxi back instead of waiting for the tram.
A good night had by all! Can't wait for the ice skating!
