Howdy folks,

After the fun and touristy adventures of San Francisco, I was sad to leave without exploring more of the city. But time was short and we headed off towards Yosemite National Park and arrived after lunch. It was raining as we drove, but it cleared up enough for us to get out and take some photos at Valley View. We drove to the Chapel and got out to do the short hike to the base of the Yosemite Waterfall which was absolutely massive. The park is in the middle of a canyon high in the mountains and we had to drive back out to our hotel just outside the entrance. That night we had chicken caesar wraps and had a swim in the indoor pool and hot tub. Just before we went to bed it started snowing!

When we got up in the morning, a blanket of snow had covered the cars and gardens, but was melting quickly. As we drove back up into Yosemite the snow got thicker and thicker and we were scheduled to do a hike up to the summit of the Yosemite Waterfalls. As Vern checked with the guides what trails were open, we watched an introductory video in the information centre. Despite the snow, we were able to walk halfway up the trail and our feet were soon wet from the fresh snow. We managed to get far up enough to see the upper waterfall before a dumping of snow forced us to turn back. It was quite slippery on the way down and we decided to catch the shuttle to the other hike at Vernal Falls which was just as slippery to climb, but more fun to slide down on the ice. We finished the day with a hot chocolate at the Awanchee Hotel fireplace - brilliant. For dinner we went to the local bar before squeezing another swim in before bed.

Today we were supposed to travel up to Lake Tahoe, but halfway there we were told that the 2 main highways were closed due to avalanche and poor visability. It wasn't surprising given the rain and rock slides we had encountered to that point. What it did mean that we had to turn south again and drive all afternoon to Fresno, arriving just before 6pm. We did have a good swim before heading out for Mexican in the still rainy conditions. Tomorrow, Death Valley...
