On the one full day that we had in Philadelphia it was pouring with rain and the day before there was a music festival, so these two factors put a massive spanner in the works.

The main sights we visited were Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Back in the day Philadelphia was the capital of the USA before Washington DC. Independence Hall is where the declaration of independence was signed. The Declaration of Independence is when the 13 American Colonies that were at war with England would regard themselves as independent states and would no longer be part of England, this happened on July 4th 1776 (hence Independence Day).
The Liberty Bell was originally in the steeple of  Independence Hall. Legend has it that the Liberty Bell became famous when an aged bell-ringer rang it on July 4, 1776, after hearing the Second Continental Congress's vote for independence. Despite the fact that the bell did not ring for independence on that July 4, the tale was widely accepted as fact, even by some historians. The bell has many cracks and pieces chipped away from people collecting pieces as souvenirs. At the beginning of 1885, the City of Philadelphia, which owns the bell, allowed it to go to various expositions and patriotic gatherings. The bell attracted huge crowds wherever it went, but the bell's condition was getting worse so the last bell journey was in 1915.

The other attraction that we missed out on seeing because of the music festival was the Rocky statue and the stairs that Sylvester Stallone ran while training in the famous movie 'Rocky'.  We were looking forward to having a Rocky moment and running up those stairs. Maybe someone else could do it for us if they visit Phili.

We were lucky enough to go and visit Mac's Tavern. For those of you that are fans of  the TV show 'It's always sunny in Philadelphia', this is the bar that characters Mac and Dee (husband and wife in real life own). Inside there are photos and a mural of the characters from the show, worth stopping for a pint or two.
