23rd March 2007  Port Douglas, Australia

After seeing the amazing site of the Cassowary in Mission Beach the rain came down so we got in the van and headed up the coast.  We popped into Cairns so Daniel could book his diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef for next week then headed up to Port Douglas.  To get to Port Douglas you drive up a lovely coastal road which looked just like the roads in Kefalonia.  The town of Port Doglas is very nice with lots of nice shops and restaurants and a campsite is nearby in the forest, very peaceful apart from the noisy lorikeets.  Late at night the kitchen area gets taken over by cane toads as this is obviously a great place to catch bugs!

24th March 2007 Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge, Australia

The only problem with staying right nest to the rainforest (apart from the bugs and the humidity) is that the birds wake you up very, very early.

We went back into Port Douglas this morning for another stroll around before heading up to Mossman Gorge.  This whole area is home to the Yulanji Aboriginal people and again the forest is protected.  We went to the gorge which has very strong rapids then went for an hour long walk through the rainforest which included crossing an Indiana Jones inspired swing bridge (although luckily this one didn't snap as we were halfway across like it does in the films).  There is a little part of the gorge that is sheltered from the rapids and again croc-free so Daniel went for another swim, he is beginning to look like Huckleberry Finn but with stubble and a beer-belly.  We visited the Aboriginal Art Gallery on the way back and saw some lovely pieces of work; they also do 'Dreamtime Walks' from here that sound really interesting.
