It is now been over 2 weeks since we landed in the Philippines and family is coming and going. Everyday we seem to run into more cousins aunts and uncles, some of which I haven't seen since I was a little boy. Recently my tito Sunny came to Manila on business. He is my Tita Celia's husband, and it was nice to see him out here. On Saturday, Ubby went home on is own because he had previously made plans to go out with his old buddies on a golf trip in Florida. So, left behind is Evelyn and Joel, who's birthday is coming up next weekend.

Speaking of family, we just came across an amazing coincidence. My cousin and really good friend Ryan, who I went to preschool and camp with happens to be living in Manila right now! He's out here working with an NGO aimed towards Child Protection within the Philippines. It's been really amazing to reconnect with him after almost 6 or 7 years since we last met. We'll hope to do some traveling with him in the coming weeks.

Even though its only been 2 weeks, thinking back.... it seem like a month of events have gone by.

Since the Krakauer family came out, we've been traveling all around on half, full, and multi day trips. It's been a real treat to travel with them. Even though we tend to gear towards 2 totally different styles of traveling, it's been fun. After struggling for food and shelter in thailand, watching every baht and peso with eyes of a hawk, it's a pleasure to relax in the comfort of family.... And not to mention their "luxurious" traveling style.

Recently we went out to visit Boracay Island. What a place! Its a tiny Island nestled near the heart of the Philippine Islands. Its about a 7 km stretch from the north tip to the south. And to get there, you have to take a tiny Plane to the nearby northern tip of Panay Island (the town you land in is called Caticlan). From there, we took a jeep to the port and then a small boat to the nearby Boracay Island. Its kinda neat.... to get into the boat you have to walk through a bit of water, so we were told to wear shorts that day as we'd be soaking our legs. If you really didn't want to get wet, you can opt out for a lift from a local who will gladly pick you up and carry you for a small tip. We roughed it the few feet through the water... not so bad.

THe Island itself is very commercialized at this point. In the north end there are major developments going on as well as recently completed golf course. But during our time there, we made the best of our surroundings.
We rented a bike one day and scooted around the island to explore the small villages and isolated beaches. And most of the time was spent on the white sands. Like I said, this was a real treat. We don't think we would have gone if it wasn't for the family. Its just not really our scene, and it seems that you need a fair bit of cash to make it through the week on this island. (out of our budget!)

Heres some pics to tell the tale.... If your planning to visit the phillipines, it s the most visited island and one of the most popular tourist attractions.  If you have the time and money, We'd recommend it simply for the warm water, shallow coast line, and white sands. It was a good week to spend emerged in water and surrounded by palm trees and family.

Joel and Evelyn leave on the 25th of Feb. So until then, well be around manilla.... and afterwards we'll be touring around on our own.

Oh, and today we were actually planning on taking a few days at Bicol.... a region south east of the manilla area. Its about a 45 min plane ride.... and when we began our decent this morning, we we forced to turn the plane around due to visibility. We had to go back to manilla and cancell the trip. Bummer, but such is life. we'l try and make it to that area of the phillipines later in our trip. There, we were going to hike the "Mayon Volcano"... disputidly, the most perfectly shaped volcano/mountain in the world.... before Mt. Fuji!.. but more on that area another time...
