we rolled into santa cruz, bolivia, today after a little 23 hour jaunt from filadelfia, paraguay. santa cruz is a jumpinī little city, with some lively street markets selling everything from cheese to soap (rather than soap-flavored cheese like paraguay) and from brooms to watches. this feels more than a little like mexico. the central square is particularly nice; itīs a whole block of palm trees, granite and wooden benches, and men in white jackets walk around and sell coffee or juice from their carts. not too long ago, there were sloths that lived in the trees in the plaza, but they relocated them to the zoo as the city grew.
we didnīt really do too much in santa cruz apart from enjoying a nice hotel room and fresh fruit salads. santa cruz is a blast of color and flavor contrasting nicely with the more monochromatic experiences we had in paraguay. the bus ride was definitely worth it.
