We are planning to travel to South America this December, and to volunteer in different capacities in several countries as we work our way from Chile to Mexico. We are undertaking this trip for a number of reasons. One is to show South Americans that the United States is populated by people who would rather work along side them than invade or exploit them. And although I am fluent in Spanish, it is a major goal of Bobs to become fluent before our trip is over. We have both served domestically, and now we are feeling the urge to serve abroad-to take advantage of the opportunities for historical, cultural, and interpersonal exchange that traveling in South and Central America, and Mexico will afford. I was born in Mexico, but have lived in the U.S.A. since I was 6, and I am looking forward to immersing myself once again in the vibrant and familiar cultures that surround my native Mexico. Bob is look forward to learning the language and culture, as well as how to survive in a state of being permanently sun burnt. We are both considering joining the Peace Corps soon, and this trip feels like a natural extension of what we've been doing through our volunteer work and a logical next step towards Peace Corps service.
