You can do elephant rides in most places in Thailand, but the level of authenticity varies greatly. I'm not sure how authentic riding an elephant ever is, because it's not a terribly efficient means of getting from point A to point B. In fact, I followed the entire journey on foot to take pictures. I did this not because I enjoy watching elephants defecate on a mountain path in front of me at eye level, but because I wanted Jeremy and Jackie to have cool documentation of this experience. The light kind of sucked, so the photos are only okay. But it's still pretty cool. And it's definitely more of an experience than sitting on an elephant at a circus in the States. But the journey didn't include any logging or treks through vast poppy fields. There are lots of photos, mostly for the benefit of the riders' families, but there are probably about 100 more than casual viewers care to see.
