I really enjoyed touring Ayuthaya with my parents. We hadn't been there yet, and it was cool to experience it with them. It's odd, but it reminded me of Christmas. My mother always told me that the reason Christmas was able to maintain its magic and allure even into adulthood for her was because she was constantly getting to see it through her children's eyes. The opportunity to watch someone you love stare in wonder brings that amazement back into our own hearts. So for parents, everything becomes new again when you're watching and helping your children experience the world. The roles were reversed in Thailand, and I was able to remember the awe that enveloped me when I first began traveling and particularly when we first arrived in Thailand 8 months earlier. My parents who are now grandparents were so childlike and captivated by the world that I marveled along with them. I certainly haven't seen so much of the world that it is dull and faded in my eyes, but there is nothing like that initial shock and disbelief that accompanies our first images of another culture that previously existed only in films and stories. I was thrilled to share that with them.
