We left Phnom Penh behind and were ready to see a brighter side of Cambodia.  After a 6-hour and not unpleasant bus ride, we found ourselves in Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor.  We checked into the hotel we had originally been offered in Phnom Penh, but only after negotiating a price that was at least close to what we had been told we would be paying at the hotel we stayed at in the previous city.  Got it?

When we looked into getting a driver for the tour of Angkor, we found out we could buy our tickets that evening and it would not count against our days on the pass.  So we rushed out to see sunset at the site, excited to see the famed city before we had expected.  It had been on our agendy from the beginning and is only a day's bus ride from Bangkok, but we had taken the long road around, and were just showing up after 6 months in Southeast Asia.

Our tuk tuk sped by Angkor Wat and we only caught a glimpse from the road.  The spot to watch the sunset was further away in the complex, so the wat would have to wait for the following day.

We were dropped off at the foot of Phnom Bahkeng, which is reputed to be the ideal spot to watch the sun drop behind the Cambodian horizon.  It's a quick and not terribly difficult walk to the top.  We could see clouds sweeping toward us, but were hoping they wouldn't roll in until after dark.  We watched them continue to march across the sky, but it was actually quite beautiful.  But then then they arrived, and the bottom fell out.  We began the journey back down the hilltop, with a river of water following us down the path.  Just as we arrived back at our tuk-tuk, the downpour ceased and the sky cleared.  It was a chilly ride back to town.
