Visiting New York City for the first time is an incredible experience. Having grown up in Texas, we have a different sense of space than people on the East Coast. Because we have...space. But New York City seems to have just as many buildings as Texas does, but they've somehow put them on a tiny island. And the city is so alive. Just incredible.

We hit all the hot spots. We went up to the top of the Empire State Building. What a phenomenal view. And we got to see an Elvis Costello concert in this really cool, old theater. We were staying with this girl Patricia who lived in Queens and she managed to get some free tickets.

And this was early November of 2001. So 9/11 had just happened. The World Trade Center was still smoldering 01 Streets of New York City

. The air was choked with ash and fumes. And the tension was still palpable. I've posted some photos. But I can't even begin to describe the feeling of being there. I know it was almost 6 weeks later, but there was still a sense of immediacy. Of closeness. I don't know. It was rough.

And flying out of JFK was a little scary. But we couldn't be too frightened. Our parents had already voiced their concerns with out decisions to still move to Europe after all the 9/11 events. But we had to go. We'd been planning for so long. It was too important. And so we did.

It's also strange that a plane flying out of JFK crashed a day or two after we left. And it landed in Queens.

All of that aside. New York is a great city. And they really do have great hot dogs.
