We had BritRail passes, Eurorail passes, round-trip plane tickets from New York to London, and some duffel bags of warm clothes. Michelle and I both grew up in El Paso, so we were prepared to be miserably cold for the next 9 months. The plan was to get to England, buy some cheap travel packs, find a live-in pub job in Scotland, make some cash, then travel Europe. Sounds simple enough.

But first we had to get to NYC to catch our flights. We scheduled the flight for November 9. It was $250 round trip, $350 with taxes. I thought we could go see my parents who lived in Richmond, Virginia. We had some time to kill. We had worked all summer and saved up money. We were ready to get out of Texas. Michelle's uncle worked for Amtrak and hooked us up with family train tickets for free. We weren't in his immediate family, but they'd never notice would they?

So we hopped a train to Virginia. Our travels had begun.
