I couldn't party as much as the others. Drinking cheap rum until 5 a.m., then working in the sun from 8 - 4 was too much for me. Even without the hangover, I very often wished for death while we were at the site. So I limited my partying to a couple of nights a week.
There were 25 students or so on the trip. We each paid $1100 on top of our tuition for room and board in Belize. So they hooked us up. The rented a large house/compound and the guys all slept in the basement on air mattresses or cots
So was it exotic and magical like national geographic makes it look? No.
But it was a great experience and I met some really cool people. This was probably the best part. I went from having 2 friends at Texas State to having a dozen or so. I was living the good life.
Plus we got to take off to the Cays for a couple of days and that was great. My friend Courtney and I also managed to get in trouble for hitch hiking back to town from some ruins we were visiting. This was two days into the trip. And Court and I were a combined 51 years old, so being lectured was interesting.
I'll write more as I think of it. But it was cool. We had some nasty mishaps that I won't discuss, but it was definitely a memorable experience.
