I apologize in advance, but I probably won't write much in these entries, at least not the first time around. But that definitely isn't because there's not much to say. This trip was phenomenal.

We flew British Airways from Dallas to London to Rome. Arriving in Rome, we were surprised to just stroll through immigration without even having to fill out a form. They didn't even enter our passport info into a computer. In Asia, you have to provide two blood samples and retina scan, and that's just to borrow a pencil to fill out your forms in triplicate. So it was nice to be in Europe for the first time in a decade.

Exiting the airport, we got on a train to head into Rome. It was apparently sponsored by local gang members because they had put their names all over it. Multi-colored letters 6 feet tall covered the doors, walls, and windows. Riding into town, we noticed they were also nice enough to paint their names and racial slurs on street signs, park benches, and even ancient ruins. I had forgotten how much graffiti there is in Italy. To clarify, there's a lot. I'm guessing 4% of the nation's GDP is spent on spray paint.

But what's amazing is that Italy is so cool and gorgeous that what would be a glaring eyesore anywhere else is easy to ignore. Riding the train first to Rome and then to Tivoli, we saw poppies in bloom at the foot of stunning churches and ancient aqueducts crawling out of the mountains. As we approached Tivoli at dusk, we saw a massive waterfall spilling out from a hillside covered in stunning architecture, the water disappearing into a lush valley below. Then, stepping into the picturesque town, we were greeted by church bells. Walking hand in hand with Lindsey through the hilltop town, I was suddenly aware of how much I had missed Italy since I left 10 years before.

When we got to the B&B, the owner Monica greeted us and led us to a stunning room. You'll have to see the pictures to believe it. She served as strawberries and cream as we settled in after our 18-hour journey, and we laid back on our plush couch, thrilled to be beginning the honeymoon we'd been dreaming about for almost a year.
